Hygrocybe mexicana , first described from Oaxaca, Mexico, is a very small agaric
with deep red, glabrous, dry, umbilicate pilei 5-10 mm diam, broadly adnate, orangish
red to pinkish red lamellae, a tiny, dry, deep red stipe, and relatively large
basidiospores (8.0-10.5 X 6.0-7.5 µm). Forma defibulata , known only from
lowland alien forests on the island of Hawai`i, differs from the type form by lacking
clamp connections and producing only bisporic basidia.
