Lepiota humei , first described from Florida, is easily recognized by the broadly
convex, white pileus with white scales and a smooth yellow umbo, crowded, free
white lamellae, a narrow white stipe with a superior annulus, and by the vinaceous
staining reaction (between pinot noir and merlot) where bruised. The species is quite
common on the campus of the University of Hawai`i at Hilo in gardens mulched
with grass clippings and compost.
