Aseroe rubra is undoubtedly the most common phalloid fungus in the Hawaiian
Islands. Commonly called the starfish stinkhorn, it is found from Lowland Alien
Forests up to Montane Wet Forests on all islands. As with other phalloid fungi, a
strong, fetid odor attracts insects who eat the gleba and disperse the basidiospores in
their feces.
