In the Hawaiian Islands, this lovely pure white agaric has been found only on
decaying leaves and sticks of Sugi pine (Cryptomeria japonica (L.) D. Don), a tree
introduced from Japan. The entire pileus and stipe surfaces are covered with long,
helical, capitate cystidia. Hemimycena tortuosa has been reported from the bark of
both conifers and hardwoods in France, England and British Columbia (Redhead, Can.
J. Bot. 67: 3003-3062). We have recently collected it on Eucalyptus bark in California.
