There are two common Galerina species in Hawaiian montane native forests,
viz., G. decipiens shown here, and G. atkinsoniana the next species illustrated.
Galerina decipiens is closely allied with G. hypnorum (Schrank: Fr.) Kühner which
differs primarily in basidiospore morphology. For a comparison of these two species
see Mycologia 88: 278-294, 1996. Galerina decipiens was first described from a single
population in upstate Michigan. One can ask whether the species originated in
Michigan and escaped to the Hawaiian Islands, or whether the species is native to
Hawaii and was later introduced to Michigan?
