Hygrocybe hapuuae is a tiny, viscid, yellow species that looks more like a
Mycena than a Hygrocybe . Basidiomes are produced on moss-covered fallen logs
of hapu`u (a native tree fern in the genus Cibotium ) or directly on aerial senescent
hapu`u fronds. The new species is known at present from a single native montane
ohi`a-hapu`u forest on the island of Hawai`i, where it is relatively common. It is
allied with H. luteo-omphaloides and H. mycenoides .
