Hygrocybe pakelo is a relatively common species in native montane rain forests
on the islands of Hawai`i and Moloka`i. It is allied with H. psittacina and several
other glutinous north temperate taxa. The epithet pakelo is Hawaiian for "to slip
out of the hand like a slippery fish." A manuscript describing all of the known
Hygrophoraceae in the Hawaiian Islands has been submitted to Mycologia for
publication.
