We have found this species in well-fertilized cow pastures and dung on Mauna Kea, Hawai`i and Haleakala, Maui. Merlin and Allen (J. Ethnopharmacology 40: 21-40. 1993) reported P. subbalteatus as a psychoactive species that has been collected in Hawai`i for non-traditional recreational purposes. If you are considering ingesting Hawai`i's common dung-inhabiting mushrooms for recreational purposes remember two things: 1) All mushrooms containing the psychoactive compounds psilocybin and psilocin are illegal, and collecting them may be accompanied by severe legal ramifications; and 2) many of the common dung-inhabiting mushrooms of the Hawaiian Islands (and elsewhere) cause gastrointestinal upset when ingested and numerous poisoning cases are reported each year from eating these mushrooms.
