Known also as Leucopaxillus amarus in many fieldguides, the Bitter Brown
Leucopaxillus has been collected under pines at Hosmer Grove on Maui, and under
pines or Eucalyptus and Cupressus on Mauna Kea, Hawai`i. The species has
probably been introduced from North America and is distinguished by a brown to
reddish brown pileus, white, crowded, adnate lamellae, a white stipe arising from
copious coarse white rhizomorphs, and as the common name implies, a strong
bitter taste.
