This species is commonly collected on needles of introduced pines throughout
the Hawaiian Islands. Recent evidence from cultural characters and molecular data
(Desjardin, unpubl.) and from mating system analyses (Scott Gordon, unpubl.) indicate
that the morphospecies M. androsaceus is actually a complex of genetically distinct
taxa hiding under one species circumscription.
